The TITLE I PROGRAM at NORTHSIDE SCHOOL
September 2013
Title I program description
The Title I program at Northside School is a federally funded, multi-faceted general education program in which students in grades 1-5 are provided with extra assistance in the areas of language arts (reading/writing), math, science, and social studies. Dairia Ray, a highly qualified teacher, gives this additional help during the school day. This year, due to budget cuts, Title I will offer services to children for half of the school day. The intent of Northside’s Title I program is to deliver integrated, curriculum-driven instruction that is aligned with school/district goals and objectives.
How was your child identified?
The need for Title I services is determined by using a combination of our district’s assessments, which may include MEAP scores, NWEA scores, reading assessments (Fountas & Pinnell and Ann Arbor benchmarks), reading and math report card outcomes from June 2013, and recommendations from their present classroom teacher.
Title I services at Northside Elementary School
Title I direct instruction is offered during the school day. It is typically offered on a small group pull-out basis, so that the support does not supplant classroom instruction. Student goals are collaboratively planned with the classroom teacher. Sometimes this instruction is provided in small groups (1-3 students). Other times this instruction is done in larger groups (i.e., Read 180/Systems 44). The educational staff agrees on when this extra assistance will occur.
Additional Title I programming such as extended day learning; lending libraries; and workshops that give parents ideas about how to help their child(ren) at home with academics may be offered to families whose child(ren) receive Title I instruction during the school day and to those children who show an academic need and may not be receiving Title I direct instruction during the school day. If your child is eligible to benefit from these supports, invitations will be sent home to you before they occur.
You will receive additional communication about which of the services described above your child is eligible to receive.
Parent Involvement
A crucial part of the Title I program at Northside is its parent involvement piece. Parents are encouraged to have conferences with the classroom teacher and Title I staff. In the fall, parents are asked to fill out a needs assessment survey and a program evaluation survey in the spring.
As a Title I school, we receive additional funds from the federal government based on the number of free and reduced lunches we serve. These extra funds allow our students access to resources that enrich and expand their educational experience. With the support of parents, our goal is for students to accelerate their learning and not need this kind of explicit, direct instruction for an entire year. We anticipate as an end result that our children will become capable, competent, and confident learners who will be successful, literate leaders in this global society.
Per federal guidelines, parents/guardians have the right to refuse services for his/her child in writing at anytime; however, we highly encourage parents/guardians to take advantage of the additional support. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns at 734-994-1958. I look forward to working with your child and with you this year.
